Development Finance for COVID-19 Should Uphold Human Rights

A statement coordinated by the Coalition for Human Rights Development that CESR contributed to urges development finance institutions ("DFIs" include national and multilateral development banks and international institutions such as the IMF) to make sure the billions of dollars of COVID relief funding they have provided upholds human rights and economic justice for those who are most vulnerable.

Much DFI support is going toward governments and other entitities with poor human rights records and some of the money will go to corporations and banks, inevitably never reaching those who are the most vulnerable. The statement asks that DFIs use their control over such funding to address growing poverty and inequality, uphold transparency and accountability, and sustain human rights.
