CESR is Hiring a Communications Manager

The Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR) is an international non-governmental organization that works to harness the power of human rights to inspire fairer and more sustainable economies. Our vision is of a world in which a just distribution of resources and power enables current and future generations to live with dignity, in full enjoyment of their economic and social rights. 
We have recently embarked on a new organizational strategy which will focus our energies over the next three years on the goal of envisioning a human rights-based economy and catalyzing action towards it. Communication is critical in advancing this goal and in responding to the challenges of the current context, as well as to the opportunities it has opened to strengthen alliances across movements working for economic justice. We are seeking a dynamic communications professional with a passion for social justice to help us shift the narrative about the values underpinning our economies, and the role human rights strategies can play in advancing systemic change. 


Role and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of CESR's Director of Strategy and Learning, the primary responsibilities of the Communications Manager include:
A.  Communications strategy
Developing, implementing and periodically reviewing a comprehensive communications strategy for CESR that advances the organization’s mission, values and overall strategic objectives by growing our reach and influence among key audiences.
Working to develop a shared understanding across the organization of our key audiences and messages, and how communications can drive positive change in the fast-changing context we work in.
Leading our efforts to become better story-tellers and to weave human rights into compelling new narratives about the role of the economy; setting out a vision and path to pursuing CESR’s story-telling and narrative-shifting goals.
Identifying effective ways to illustrate the value and impact of our work with partners across movements working for human rights, economic and environmental justice; and maximizing our impact by presenting and disseminating our work in an accessible manner across various channels, including social media.
Creating and reviewing metrics and indicators to assess progress on the communications strategy, and gathering relevant data for this purpose, drawing on best practices. 
B. Communications Management   
Producing a wide range of communications materials and other outputs, including news blasts, reports, briefings, factsheets, blog posts, periodic bulletins, press releases, annual reports, OpEds, video and other audiovisual materials;
Maintaining content on CESR’s website, including writing, editing and content management; enhancing its design and accessibility, and managing the transition of its online management system;
Generating engaging social media content and growing CESR’s audience through platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, as well as through relevant listservs;
Proactively seeking opportunities to bring CESR’s perspective and voice to public conversations on economic injustice and inequality, maintaining and expanding contacts with relevant media;
Editing and coordinating the production and dissemination of CESR’s research and advocacy publications and other outputs, ensuring these adhere to house style and quality standards, as well as promoting distinctive and consistent visual branding for the organization;
Managing relationships with web developers, designers, translators, videographers, photographers and other communications-related service providers.
C.  Organizational development
Ensuring CESR’s communications strategy contributes to its development efforts, helping to draft fundraising materials and appeals, in coordination with the Development Manager;
Working with project teams to ensure communications work (print and digital) is effectively built into project plans and is adequately resourced;
Keeping abreast of developments in the field of non-profit strategic communications, including digital communications technologies, so as to enhance the effectiveness of CESR’s communications approaches;
Provide strategic communications advice and guidance to CESR’s leadership, staff and partners, exploring strategies to boost internal communications capacity as an organizational priority, including capacity for multilingual production;
Help sustain a highly collaborative organizational culture that reflects CESR’s values, ensuring open and transparent channels of internal communication and decision making.
Person profile 
The ideal candidate will have:
A degree in journalism, communications, international relations, social sciences, or a related field; at least five years’ experience in strategic communications in a human rights or social justice environment.
Familiarity with and commitment to human rights and economic justice issues. Knowledge of human rights concepts and principles is desirable, as is experience of advocacy on issues relating to human rights and economic justice for different audiences.
Proven ability to conceptualize communications in terms of audiences, objectives and channels, understanding that all of our communications should be driven by strategic objectives and underpinned by a coherent approach.
Knowledge of current and emerging trends in communications strategy, tools and channels; strong technical skills, including familiarity with digital platforms (e.g. Drupal, Wordpress, MailChimp), website content management, and search engine optimization best practices; proven track record of growing social media following;
An ability to synthesize ideas and communicate complex or technical concepts clearly and accessibly; understanding of narrative framing and messaging techniques; ability to articulate CESR’s mission goals and added value coherently and persuasively to different audiences;
Close attention to detail and concern for the quality, consistency and effectiveness of CESRs communications; the ability to effectively edit and proofread the work of others and to integrate multiple perspectives into a consistent organizational voice;
An eye for coherent visual branding; familiarity with producing graphics and audio-visuals (e.g. infographics, data visualization, video) and basic design skills (e.g. using InDesign, Photoshop, iMovie) are highly desirable;
Sound project management skills, good judgment and proven ability to work effectively as a member of a small and diverse team;
Diversity of geographic experience; knowledge of languages other than English (especially Spanish) is an advantage. 
Cross-cultural competence and strong interpersonal skills; a commitment to CESR’s values and a strong track record of working across the lines of gender, race, class and culture.
Location and terms 
CESR has an office in New York, though its international staff team based in New York, Bogotá and Johannesburg is currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Location is flexible, with a preference for candidates based in the global South. The broad salary range for this position is US$60 – 75,000, taking into account experience and the cost of living in the person’s location. CESR also offers a range of benefits including health and dental benefits, participation in a 401(k) pension scheme with matching employer contributions, and 22 days of paid annual leave in addition to public holidays.
